Apple to Launch Passwords App, Challenging 1Password and LastPass

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) will introduce a new app called Passwords next week, designed to simplify login processes for users, according to insiders familiar with the matter. The app is set to debut as part of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS 15, the latest versions of Apple’s operating systems for iPhone, iPad, and Mac. This announcement will be made on June 10 at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference.

Powered by iCloud Keychain, Apple’s existing service for syncing passwords and account information across devices, the Passwords app will generate and manage passwords more visibly and conveniently. Previously, these capabilities were hidden in the settings app or presented during login prompts. By creating a dedicated app, Apple aims to enhance the security and privacy of its devices while encouraging the use of stronger passwords.

This new app will intensify competition with established password managers like 1Password and LastPass. Users will have the ability to import passwords from these rival services into Apple’s Passwords app.

A spokesperson for Cupertino, California-based Apple declined to comment.

The Passwords app will feature a list of user logins, organized into categories such as accounts, Wi-Fi networks, and Passkeys—a password alternative that uses Face ID and Touch ID. Like most password managers, it will allow for automatic filling of login information on websites and apps.

Additionally, the app will be compatible with the Vision Pro headset and Windows computers. It will also support verification codes and function as an authentication app similar to Google Authenticator.

The Passwords app is just one highlight of the upcoming WWDC event. The primary focus will be Apple’s artificial intelligence initiative, which includes features like notification summaries, instant photo editing, AI-generated emojis, and an enhanced Siri digital assistant. Apple will also reveal a partnership with OpenAI to integrate the ChatGPT chatbot.
