Dell Technologies (NYSE:DELL) is assembling half of the racks for the supercomputer that xAI, the artificial intelligence startup founded by Elon Musk, is building. Musk revealed this in a post on social media platform X on Wednesday.
Recently, Musk informed investors that xAI plans to construct a supercomputer to power the next version of its AI chatbot, Grok, according to a report by The Information in May. Dell CEO Michael Dell also stated in a separate post on X that the company is creating an “AI factory” in collaboration with Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) to support the upcoming version of Grok.
Training AI models like xAI’s Grok requires tens of thousands of power-hungry chips, which are currently in short supply. Earlier this year, Musk noted that training the Grok 2 model required approximately 20,000 Nvidia H100 graphic processing units. He added that future models, such as Grok 3 and beyond, will necessitate around 100,000 Nvidia H100 chips.
Musk aims to have the proposed supercomputer operational by the fall of 2025, according to The Information.
Elon Musk founded xAI last year to compete with Microsoft-backed OpenAI and Alphabet’s Google (NASDAQ:GOOG). Notably, Musk also co-founded OpenAI.
